What to Bring

Now's the time to apologise to your parents, as you'll need to bring an amount of stuff that's enough to make them cringe when loading the car. First off, your room already contains:

- Bed and mattress,
- Desk with a desk lamp,
- 'Swivelly' office chair on wheels,
- Wardrobe,
- Bin,
- Sink (unless you have en suite, of course),
- Two or three shelves.

So you'll need to bring...

Clothes, obviously, including any fancy dress you may have lying around - it'll come in very useful for college events throughout the year.

Clothes horse, as dryers are £1 a time. You'll also need stuff to wash clothes, a laundry basket and other associated things. Liquitabs (the ones you put in the drum) are the easiest to use with the machines provided.

Kitchenware such as pots, pans, cutlery and crockery. Nothing like this is provided so bring everything you'll need. Toasters, microwaves and kettles are provided, but if you want to bring your own electricals you'll need to get them checked by the porters for electrical safety. Remember things like this aren't allowed in rooms either.

Tea towels, dishcloths, sponges and other stuff like this. Sadly, you will have to do some washing up at some point in the year. A washing-up bowl might be useful too...

Bedding, as you're only provided with a mattress!

Stationery and books, though these are often best left until you're at Uni, since you can usually pick up second-hand bargains and you can check what the library has to offer to save some cash.

Laptop or computer. Internet in halls (which is all included in your rent) is either wireless or via a provided network cable. It's also a good idea to bring all associated CDs so that if it crashes a day before a deadline you don't need to ask Mum to post it all up. A memory stick comes in handy too.

Printer is an optional but useful extra. There is a (newly decorated) computer room in Langwith, but printing costs and there is often a queue.

Camera for all those happy moments!

Stuff for your room such as posters, decorations, rugs... anything to make it feel more like home. No candles are allowed though, sorry. There are numerous poster sales on campus, normally in Freshers' week, so don't worry if you don't have any. Bring pins for your pinboard too. Furniture is best left at home until you know how big your room is!

TV, DVD player, games consoles and similar electricals. There are no TV aerial sockets in halls and reception with an indoor aerial isn't very good. You'll also need a TV license if you're bringing a TV, which can be sorted at www.tvlicensing.co.uk. Also, be aware that services such as XBOX Live do not work in halls.

If you have any questions about what you can and can't bring, you can get in touch with any of the JCRC using the e-mail addresses provided on the JCRC Members page.
